Bass Strings

What length bass strings do I need?

Quick Answer

Match your strings to your bass's scale length and string path. Most 34-inch basses use long scale strings, but bridge design and string-through-body construction can change what fits.

S.I.T. bass string lengths, all approximate, measured as usable winding length from the ball end to the taper:

  • Short scale: 32.5 inches, for basses around 30 inches
  • Medium scale: 34 inches, for basses around 32 inches
  • Long scale: 37.25 inches, for most 34-inch basses (overall string length about 48 to 49 inches)
  • Extra long: 38 inches, for 35-inch and longer basses and many string-through-body basses

If your current strings fit correctly, replacing them with the same length is the easiest approach. If you're unsure, measure your current string from the ball end to the taper, or contact S.I.T. and we'll help.

Using the wrong length causes problems. Strings that are too long for a short scale bass can leave the thicker part of the winding wrapped around the tuning post, which hurts tuning stability and can damage the string during installation. Strings that are too short may not reach the tuning post or leave enough winding for a proper installation.
