About Power Steel Stainless Steel Bass
Power Steel Stainless is the bright end of our bass range. A stainless steel wrap over a high-tension hex core gives harder attack, more top-end presence and a tighter low end than nickel. It is the set for slap, for cutting through a loud band, and for any player who wants the string to be heard rather than felt.
Stainless is also the more durable wrap. It resists corrosion better than nickel-plated steel, which matters if you sweat or gig often.
Choosing a set
On four strings, .045–.105 is the standard and .040–.095 or .040–.100 are lighter. .050–.105 and .050–.110 add tension, for a firmer feel or lower tunings. Five-string players start at .045–.125, with .050–.130 for a tighter low B. Six-string sets run .030–.120 and .030–.125. Multi-scale (fanned fret) basses need their own sets because each string is a different length.
Scale length matters as much as gauge: a wrong-length string either won't reach or puts winding over the nut. Most production basses take standard long scale. Measure from the ball end to the nut if you are unsure.
Exposed core sets
Our exposed core sets were developed with Conklin Basses. The core sits bare where the string crosses the bridge saddle, which increases contact, strengthens the fundamental and adds articulation and sustain. We make a five-string .035–.135 and a seven-string .018–.135, both standard long scale with a 37.25" playable length from ball end to taper.

On the octave and 12-string sets the first line is the main course and the second is the octave course. The 12-string carries two of each octave string, so every course is a main string plus a doubled octave pair.
How Power Steel compares to our other bass sets
Power Steel Stainless is the brightest and hardest-hitting roundwound we make for bass. Power Wound Nickel is warmer and the usual starting point. Fusion Wound Stainless is the tighter, more focused stainless option. Foundations Stainless is the brighter, more flexible stainless set. Silencer Nickel Semi-Flat cuts finger noise, and Power Flat flatwounds go furthest toward a smooth, mellow response.
