About Fusion Wound Stainless

Fusion Wound Stainless is the tightest, most focused bright bass string we make. A 92/8 phosphor bronze under-wrap is bonded to the core before the stainless steel outer wrap goes on, so there is a second metal between the core and the surface — a different construction from a standard roundwound, and a different voice because of it.

The stainless outer wrap brings hard attack and crisp highs; the bonded under-wrap tightens the low end and keeps notes separated rather than letting them bloom into each other. Power Steel Stainless is the more open and aggressive of the two. Stainless also resists corrosion better than nickel-plated steel, so it stays bright longer if you sweat or gig often.

It suits slap and hard picking especially well, where note separation is doing most of the work.

Choosing a gauge

On four strings, .045–.105 is the standard and .040–.095, .040–.100 and .045–.100 are lighter. .050–.105 and .050–.110 add tension for a firmer feel and lower tunings. Five-string players start at .045–.125, with .045–.130 and .050–.130 for a heavier, tighter low B. Six-string sets run .030–.120 and .030–.125. All sets are standard long scale.

Gauges match our Fusion Wound Nickel line set for set, so switching between the two changes the tone and not the setup — the outer wrap is the only variable.

How Fusion Wound Stainless compares to our other bass sets

Fusion Wound Stainless is the tightest and most focused stainless set. Power Steel Stainless is the standard stainless roundwound, more open and aggressive. Fusion Wound Nickel is the same construction with a warmer nickel outer wrap, and Power Wound Nickel is the standard nickel roundwound. Silencer Nickel Semi-Flat cuts finger noise, and Power Flat flatwounds go furthest toward a smooth, mellow response.
