Bass Strings

How do I measure my bass for strings?

Quick Answer

Measure the usable winding length of your current string from the ball end to the taper, where the full winding ends. Then compare that to the string length you're considering.

Two different measurements matter, and they aren't the same thing:

  • Scale length (speaking length) is the distance from the front edge of the nut to the bridge saddle. It's the vibrating part of the string and affects feel, harmonic locations and intonation.
  • String length is the string's usable winding length. It determines whether the string will fit your bass.

When you're choosing replacement strings, the usable winding length is often the more important number. Measure scale length separately, from the nut to the bridge saddle. Most bass manufacturers also list the scale length in the instrument's specs.

Strings .055 and lighter are wound full length, so measure one of the heavier strings. If your measurement doesn't clearly match a length, contact S.I.T. before ordering.
