About Acoustic Guitar Singles
An acoustic set has two plain strings and four wound ones, and they do not wear out at the same rate. The wound low E usually goes dead first, and the plain top strings usually break first. Singles let you replace what actually failed instead of the whole set.
Phosphor bronze or 80/20
Phosphor bronze is warm and balanced, with a low end that stays full as the string ages. Golden Bronze 80/20 is brighter and crisper, with more sparkle on top. Both are stocked as singles in the same gauges, so you can mix them — 80/20 on the top strings for projection and phosphor bronze underneath for warmth is a combination players ask us about often, and buying singles is the only way to try it.
What we stock
| Type | Gauges | Count |
|---|---|---|
| Plain Steel | .008 – .026, including .0095, .0105 and .0115 | 19 |
| Phosphor Bronze wound | .018 – .070 | 23 |
| Golden Bronze 80/20 wound | .018 – .056 | 21 |
The same plain steel singles serve acoustic and electric — an unwound string has no wrap wire, so there is nothing to make it acoustic or electric.
Baritone and alternate tunings
Phosphor bronze singles go to .060 and .070, past the .056 that ends our heaviest standard acoustic set. Those are for baritone acoustics, for open tunings that drop the sixth string a long way, and for anyone who wants more under the low end than a Medium set gives.
