About Classical Strings

Classits are our classical guitar strings: clear nylon trebles paired with silver-plated wound basses. They are made for nylon-string classical and flamenco guitars, and they will not work on a steel-string acoustic. The sound is warm and round with a soft attack, and the sets hold their pitch once they have finished stretching in.

There are two things to decide — Medium or High tension, and how the strings attach at the bridge — and one optional upgrade.

Medium or High tension

Medium tension is the standard choice. It feels comfortable, responds to a light touch and suits most guitars and most players. High tension sets feel firmer under the fingers and give more volume, a tighter attack and more dynamic range. Players who dig in, play with a strong right hand, or need to project in a room usually prefer it.

Tie-end or ball-end

Tie-end is the traditional classical build: you tie the string to the bridge yourself. Ball-end sets have a ball fitted to the end of each string so they load like a steel-string acoustic. There is no tonal difference — it is purely how you attach them. If you have ever fought a classical bridge knot, buy ball-end.

Classits or Classits Elite

Elite sets use upgraded treble strings. The nylon is held to a tighter tolerance, which improves intonation up the neck and evens out the response between the three treble strings. The wound basses are the same, and so are the gauges. If your guitar plays slightly sharp or sour above the seventh fret, that is usually the trebles, and that is what Elite fixes.

Trebles are clear nylon, basses are silver-plated wound. The medium tension ball-end set runs slightly lighter trebles than the tie-end version.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use steel strings on a classical guitar?

No. Classical guitars are built for nylon strings only. See why steel strings don’t belong on a classical guitar.

Medium or High: which classical set should I buy?

Medium is the standard choice and feels comfortable for most players and guitars. High sets feel firmer under the fingers and project more, which suits players with a strong right hand. See Medium vs High sets.

Tie-end or ball-end classical strings?

There is no difference in sound, only in how they attach. Ball-end sets like SCM101B load like a steel-string acoustic, with no knots to tie. See tie-end vs ball-end.

Why do my new classical strings keep going out of tune?

Nylon stretches for the first few days. Keep tuning back up and they settle. See why new classical strings go out of tune.

What is Classits Elite?

Elite sets such as ECM101 use nylon trebles held to a tighter tolerance, which improves intonation up the neck. See the Classits Elite line.
