About Fusion Wound Nickel

Fusion Wound is built in an extra layer, and that layer is what you hear. A 92/8 phosphor bronze under-wrap is bonded to the core before the nickel-plated steel outer wrap goes on, so there is a second metal sitting between the core and the surface. A string built that way vibrates and damps differently from one with a single wrap, which is why a Fusion Wound set does not sound like a Power Wound set in the same gauge.

What you get is a tighter, more focused voice: a firmer low end with less bloom, clearer highs, and more separation between notes. Power Wound Nickel is the warmer and punchier of the two. Neither is an upgrade on the other — they are two different strings, and which one is right depends on whether you want the bass to sit inside a mix or push out of it.

The low end is where the difference shows most, which is why five and six-string players tend to end up here. On a low B in particular, that extra definition is the whole reason the line exists.

Choosing a gauge

On four strings, .045–.105 is the standard and .040–.095, .040–.100 and .045–.100 are progressively lighter. .050–.105 and .050–.110 add tension for a firmer feel and lower tunings. Five-string players start at .045–.125, with .045–.130 and .050–.130 for a heavier, tighter low B. Six-string sets run .030–.120 and .030–.125. All sets are standard long scale.

How Fusion Wound Nickel compares to our other bass sets

Fusion Wound Nickel is the tighter, more focused nickel set. Power Wound Nickel is the standard nickel roundwound — warmer and punchier — and the usual starting point. Fusion Wound Stainless is the same construction with a brighter, harder stainless outer wrap. Power Steel Stainless is brighter again. Silencer Nickel Semi-Flat cuts finger noise, and Power Flat flatwounds go furthest toward a smooth, mellow response.
