About CRT Coated Phosphor Bronze

CRT Coated is phosphor bronze with Corrosion Resistant Technology. The treatment protects the string from sweat, moisture and buildup, so a set holds its tone and feel for longer. Nothing else changes: the same phosphor bronze wrap over a high carbon steel hex core, the same warm highs and full low end.

It earns its place if you play often, sweat a lot, live somewhere humid, or simply resent changing strings. Acoustic guitars are also the ones most likely to sit out on a stand between sessions, which is exactly where a coated set pays for itself. Uncoated phosphor bronze still feels fractionally more open to some players, which is why we make both.

Choosing a gauge

.012–.053 (CP1253 Light) is the balanced starting point. For an easier feel, .010–.047 (CP1047 Extra Light) is the lightest, with .011–.052 (CP1152 Pro Light) between the two. For a light top over a heavier bottom, .012–.056 (CP1256 Bluegrass) is built for flatpicking, and .013–.056 (CP1356 Medium) is the heaviest six-string for maximum volume. Twelve-string players have .010–.047 (CP121047 Light).

On the 12-string set the first line is the main course and the second is the paired course — unison on the top two strings, octaves on the bottom four.

How CRT Coated compares to our other acoustic sets

CRT Coated is the long-life option. Phosphor Bronze is the same wrap uncoated. Golden Bronze 80/20 is brighter and crisper, Royal Bronze fuller, and American Roots Monel drier and more vintage. Semi-Flat Silencers 80/20 cut finger noise rather than extending string life.

Frequently asked questions

What are coated acoustic guitar strings?

CRT Coated is phosphor bronze with Corrosion Resistant Technology, which protects the string from sweat, moisture and buildup so it lasts longer. See CRT Coated Phosphor Bronze.

Are coated acoustic strings worth it?

They pay off most on guitars that sit out between sessions, and for players who sweat or live somewhere humid. See are coated strings worth it.

Do coated strings sound different from uncoated phosphor bronze?

It is the same phosphor bronze wrap with the same warm tone. Some players feel uncoated Phosphor Bronze is slightly more open, which is why we make both.
