Bass Strings

What are the best strings for a short-scale bass?

Quick Answer

A short-scale bass, typically around 30", needs short scale strings with about 32.5" of usable winding length. Long scale strings leave thick winding on the tuning post. .045–.105 is a standard starting gauge, and .040–.095 is lighter. Our NR45105S and NR4095S are built for short-scale basses.

Length matters more than gauge here. A string that's too long can leave the thick part of the winding wrapped around the tuning post, which hurts tuning and can damage the string.

How to choose:

  • Measure your bass from the ball end seat to the nut, or measure your current string from ball end to taper.
  • Around 30" scale: short scale strings (32.5").
  • Around 32" scale: medium scale strings (34").
  • Gauge: .045–.105 for a balanced feel. .040–.095 for an easier, looser feel. The same gauge feels softer on a short scale, so a slightly heavier set is worth considering if strings feel loose.

S.I.T. options:

  • NR4095S Extra Light (.040–.095) and NR45105S Medium Light (.045–.105), short scale, in Power Wound Nickel Bass
  • NR545125S for a short-scale 5-string
  • NR45105M Medium Light (.045–.105) for 32" medium-scale basses
