Electric Guitar Strings

What are the best electric guitar strings for beginners?

Quick Answer

For a beginner on electric guitar in standard tuning, .009–.042 or .010–.046 nickel-plated roundwounds are sensible starting points. A .009 set is easier to fret and bend; a .010 set feels a little firmer and holds tuning steady under a heavy hand. Our S942 Extra Light and S1046 Light are both good first sets.

Experience level doesn't decide the right gauge. Comfort, tuning and the guitar do. A lighter set reduces the pressure needed to fret a note, which helps while your hands build strength and calluses. A slightly heavier set can feel more stable if you pick hard.

How to choose your first set:

  • Check your tuning. These suggestions are for standard tuning (E A D G B E).
  • Check your guitar. A 25.5" scale feels a bit tighter than a 24.75" scale with the same strings.
  • Pick a feel. Try .009–.042 if fretting feels like hard work. Try .010–.046 if strings feel loose or go sharp when you press.
  • Keep the setup in mind. High action makes any set harder to play. A setup often helps more than a gauge change.

Nickel-plated steel is a balanced middle ground for tone, so it's a straightforward place to start before exploring stainless or pure nickel.
