Acoustic Strings

Can I use acoustic strings on an electric guitar?

Quick Answer

It's not recommended. Bronze acoustic strings don't work well with magnetic pickups, so output and string-to-string balance usually suffer. Their heavier gauges and wound 3rd string also make bending harder on an electric.

Electric guitar pickups sense a vibrating magnetic string. The wrap on an electric string, such as nickel-plated steel, pure nickel or stainless steel, is chosen to work with those pickups. Phosphor bronze and 80/20 bronze wraps are chosen for acoustic tone instead, and on an electric they generally sound weaker and less even.

Acoustic sets also tend to be heavier than electric sets and usually have a wound 3rd string. On an electric, that means stiffer bends, and the strings may not fit the nut slots properly without adjustment.

If you want a particular sound from your electric, there's usually an electric string for it:

  • Power Groove Pure Nickel for a warmer, vintage voice
  • Semi-Flat Silencers for less finger noise
  • Power Flat flatwounds for the smoothest, mellowest response
