Nickel roundwounds give you a balance of tone, comfort and versatility that suits nearly every style of music, and they work well for both fingerstyle and pick playing. For most standard 4-string basses, .045–.105 is the most common starting point. It's also what many manufacturers install on new 4-string basses.
Other S.I.T. options as your taste develops:
- Foundations Nickel for a more modern nickel sound
- Foundations Stainless for maximum brightness and attack
- Power Flats for a smooth, vintage-inspired tone
- Silencers Semi-Flats for a smoother feel without moving to a full flatwound
If your bass is new and the strings still sound and feel good, there's no need to replace them right away. Learn on them, then experiment once you have more experience. Expensive strings aren't automatically better. Choosing the right construction, material, gauge and length for your bass matters far more.
