Classical Strings

What are the best classical guitar strings for beginners?

Quick Answer

For a beginner on classical guitar, medium tension nylon strings are a comfortable starting point. Ball-end sets load like a steel-string acoustic, so there's no bridge knot to tie, which makes string changes easier. Our SCM101B Classits Medium Tension Ball-End and SCM101 Tie-End are both good first sets.

Medium tension feels easier under the fingers and suits most classical guitars. High tension gives more volume and a firmer feel, which suits a stronger right-hand attack.

How to choose:

  • Set type: medium for comfort, high for more projection.
  • Ends: ball-end for easy installation, tie-end for the traditional build. There's no tonal difference.
  • Guitar type: these are for nylon-string classical and flamenco guitars only. Never put steel strings on a classical guitar.

Expect new nylon strings to stretch for several days and need frequent retuning. That's normal.

S.I.T. options in our Classical Strings collection:

  • SCM101B Medium Tension Ball-End
  • SCM101 Medium Tension Tie-End
  • SCH102B High Tension Ball-End
