Scale length is the vibrating length of the string, from the nut to the saddle. Common electric scales are 24.75" (Les Paul-style and SG-style guitars) and 25.5" (Strat-style and Tele-style guitars). Baritones run longer, often 27" or more.
At the same pitch, a string over a longer scale feels firmer. That's why a .010–.046 set can feel snappier on one guitar than another.
What that means in practice:
- Moving to a 24.75" guitar: your usual set will feel slightly looser. Going up a little is worth considering, for example from .009–.042 to .010–.046.
- Moving to a 25.5" guitar: the same set feels firmer. Dropping slightly is worth considering, for example to .0095–.044.
- Baritones and long scales: these need much heavier sets so low pitches don't feel loose.
Scale length is only one factor. Construction, core size and wrap material also change feel, so two sets with the same gauges can feel different.
Our Power Wound Nickel line includes half-gauge options like S9.544 Rock Light (.0095–.044) for fine-tuning feel, and SB1358 Baritone (.013–.058) and S1362 Baritone Custom (.013–.062) for long scales.
