Classical Strings

Why is the G string on my classical guitar thicker than the D string?

Quick Answer

Because the G string is plain nylon and the D string is wound, and the two constructions can't be compared by diameter alone.

A wound string's metal wrap adds mass, which allows a different core diameter and construction than a plain nylon string uses.

Because of this, gauge doesn't increase in a straight line across a classical set the way it does on a steel-string set.
