Classical Strings

Can I put steel strings on a classical guitar?

Quick Answer

No. A classical guitar is designed for nylon strings and shouldn't be restrung with steel-string acoustic or electric strings. Using the wrong string type can damage the guitar.

Classical and steel-string guitars are built around different string constructions and loads. Steel-string acoustics differ in bridge design and bracing and use strings with steel cores.

The reverse doesn't work either. Classical strings aren't meant for a steel-string acoustic. Always use the type of string the instrument was designed for.
