Bass Strings

What are the best bass strings for recording?

Quick Answer

For recording bass, finger noise and consistency are usually the main concerns. Semi-flat strings like our NRL45105L Silencers (.045–.105) cut squeak while keeping roundwound clarity. Flatwounds like PF45105L remove noise entirely for a warm, vintage tone. For a tighter low end with roundwound feel, try NRB45105L Fusion Wound Nickel.

A close-miked or direct bass captures every finger slide. That noise is hard to edit out, so reducing it at the string is often the simplest fix.

How to choose:

  • Clarity without the squeak: semi-flat Silencers.
  • Vintage thump, no finger noise: flatwound.
  • Tight, focused low end: Fusion Wound.
  • Bright and modern: stainless roundwound, accepting more finger noise.

New roundwounds are brightest at first and settle over days of playing. If you want a stable tone across a session, change them a day or two ahead.
