Acoustic Strings

What are the best acoustic guitar strings for recording?

Quick Answer

For recording acoustic guitar, the two biggest concerns are finger squeak and how bright the strings sound on the mic. Our GL1252 semi-flat Silencers (.012–.052) reduce squeak at the source. AR1253 American Roots Monel (.012–.053) gives a warmer, drier tone. P1254 phosphor bronze is a balanced all-rounder.

A microphone close to the strings picks up every slide between chords. A semi-flat set polishes the outer wrap so fingertips catch less, while keeping a roundwound's brightness.

How to choose:

  • Squeak is the problem: semi-flat Silencers 80/20.
  • Too much shimmer or harshness on the mic: Monel. We describe American Roots as a recording string first.
  • Balanced and familiar: phosphor bronze.
  • Bright and crisp: 80/20 bronze.

Fresh strings are brightest in their first hours of playing. If you want consistent tone across several days of tracking, change them a day or two ahead and play them in.
