How many strings does a guitar or bass have?

Quick Answer

A standard guitar has 6 strings, tuned E A D G B E. A standard bass has 4 strings, tuned E A D G, an octave below the guitar's lowest four. Extended-range versions are common: 7- and 8-string guitars, 12-string guitars with six paired courses, and 5- and 6-string basses.

Common configurations:

  • 6-string guitar: electric, acoustic and classical. E A D G B E.
  • 7-string guitar: usually adds a low B.
  • 8-string guitar: usually adds a low B and a low F#.
  • 12-string guitar: six courses of two strings, with unison pairs on the top two and octave pairs on the bottom four.
  • 4-string bass: E A D G.
  • 5-string bass: usually adds a low B (B E A D G).
  • 6-string bass: adds a low B and a high C (B E A D G C).

String sets are built for a specific string count, so order the set that matches your instrument. A 7-string set includes a heavier low string, and a 12-string set includes the octave strings.

We make sets for 6-, 7-, 8- and 12-string guitars in Power Wound Nickel, and 4-, 5- and 6-string sets in Power Wound Nickel Bass.
