Pedal Steel & Specialty

What strings should I use for pedal steel guitar?

Quick Answer

Use strings designed specifically for pedal steel tunings. They're built to keep a consistent feel, return to pitch accurately and hold up under repeated pedal movement.

You can use regular guitar strings, but they aren't ideal. Pedal steel relies on very specific gauge balances, and standard guitar strings aren't designed for constant pitch changes, which can lead to tuning instability and an uneven feel.

Material comes down to tone:

  • Nickel: warmer, smoother sound
  • Stainless steel: more brightness, attack, clarity and projection
