Pedal Steel & Specialty

Do pedal steel and lap steel use the same strings?

Quick Answer

Not usually. Pedal steel strings are designed to handle pitch changes, while lap steel strings are built for fixed tunings and a balanced feel.

Pedal steel is harder to learn than lap steel, since it requires coordination between your hands, feet and knees. Lap steel is generally the better starting point because it's simpler and builds the core skills you need.

You can sometimes play lap steel parts on pedal steel, but the feel is different and most players approach the two instruments differently.
