Bass Strings

What is the difference between roundwound, flatwound and semi-flat bass strings?

Quick Answer

Roundwounds use a round outer wrap for a brighter tone, stronger attack and more harmonics. Flatwounds use a flat wrap for a smoother feel, warmer tone and less finger noise. Semi-flats sit in between.

Neither roundwound nor flatwound is objectively better:

  • Roundwound: the most common choice. Bright, articulate and versatile across nearly every style.
  • Flatwound: the smoothest bass strings available, with a warm, fundamental-focused tone and much less finger noise. Many players find them more comfortable.
  • Semi-flat: more articulation than traditional flatwounds and less finger noise than roundwounds. Players who find roundwounds too bright and flatwounds too dark often like them, and many recording and worship bassists use them.

At S.I.T., Power Flats are our flatwound bass strings and Silencers are our semi-flats. Flatwounds often cost more because of their construction process and specialized wrap wire.
