What are the guitar string names and numbers, in order?

Quick Answer

In standard tuning, the six guitar strings from thickest to thinnest are E A D G B E. Strings are numbered the other way: the thin high E is the 1st string and the thick low E is the 6th string. So the order 6 to 1 is E (low), A, D, G, B, E (high).

The numbering trips people up because the 1st string sits closest to the floor when you hold the guitar, even though it's the highest note.

Standard tuning by string number, with typical gauges from our .010–.046 S1046 Light set:

  • 1st, high E: .010
  • 2nd, B: .013
  • 3rd, G: .017
  • 4th, D: .026 wound
  • 5th, A: .036 wound
  • 6th, low E: .046 wound

A common memory aid for E A D G B E, low to high, is "Eddie Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddie."

Single strings are sold by gauge, not by name, because the gauge for a given string changes from set to set. When you replace one string, check the gauge listed for that position in your set. Our Electric Guitar Singles and Acoustic Guitar Singles list every gauge we stock.
