How is a mandolin strung and tuned?

Quick Answer

A standard mandolin has 8 strings in 4 courses of 2, tuned G D A E low to high, in fifths like a violin. The two strings in each course are normally the same gauge and pitch.

Because each course has two matching strings, a complete set contains two of each gauge.

A-style and F-style mandolins don't need different strings because of body shape. If both are standard 8-string mandolins with comparable scale lengths in G D A E, they can use the same type of set.

Don't assume a standard mandolin set fits a mandola, octave mandolin, mandocello or other mandolin-family instrument. They can use different scale lengths, tunings and string requirements.
