How do I restring a mountain dulcimer?

Quick Answer

Hook each string's loop end over its pin at the tail end, run the string over the bridge and nut, then thread it through its tuning peg and wind it neatly. Change one string at a time so the bridge, which is often held only by string pressure, stays in place. Tune up slowly, since dulcimers are lightly built.

Mountain dulcimers use loop end strings that hook onto small pins or nails at the tail. The process is simple, but a few details keep the bridge and tuning stable.

Steps:

  1. Loosen and remove one old string. Note which side of the fretboard it ran on.
  2. Hook the loop end of the new string over the matching tail pin. Keep a light pull on the string so it doesn't slip off.
  3. Lay the string in its bridge and nut slots.
  4. Thread the end through the peg hole, leaving enough slack for a few wraps.
  5. Wind neatly so the wraps stack evenly and the string leaves the peg toward the nut.
  6. Tune close to pitch, then change the next string.

String order, from farthest to nearest you as you play:

  • Bass string: the heaviest, our .020
  • Middle string: .012
  • Melody string(s): .012, single or doubled

If your dulcimer uses friction pegs, push the peg gently into its hole as you turn so it holds. Our DUL1220 set in Dulcimer Strings is loop end and fits traditional pins without adaptation.
