Most 7-strings use either a fixed string-through bridge or a locking tremolo. The basic process is the same as any electric guitar; the low B just needs extra attention.
Steps:
- Remove one string at a time so the neck and bridge stay settled.
- Install the ball end at the bridge. On a string-through guitar, feed it from the back; on a locking tremolo, follow the clamp-and-lock procedure for your bridge.
- Bring the string to its tuner, leaving enough slack for a few wraps. The low B needs only 2 to 3 wraps.
- Wind neatly downward and tune close to pitch.
- Repeat for each string, then settle and retune.
Things to check on the low B:
- It seats in the nut slot. A heavier B may sit high in a slot cut for a lighter one.
- Intonation. The low B often needs its saddle moved back after a gauge change.
- Low-string feel. If it feels floppy, try a heavier low string or a set with a heavier bottom.
