What strings does a mountain dulcimer use?

Quick Answer

Mountain (Appalachian) dulcimers use light steel strings, traditionally loop end. Our DUL1220 set is a four-string set with three .012s and one .020, and it also fits three-string dulcimers.

Most mountain dulcimers have three or four strings over a fretboard laid out diatonically. A common tuning is D A d, from the bass string to the melody string, though players use several others.

On a four-string dulcimer, the melody string is usually doubled into a pair. Our DUL1220 set follows that standard four-string arrangement:

  • .012 and .012 for the doubled melody course
  • .012 for the middle string
  • .020 for the bass string

If your dulcimer has three strings, the set still fits. You'll just have a spare melody string.

DUL1220 is loop end, so it fits the pins on a traditional dulcimer without any adaptation. Its gauges are chosen to feel even across the strings and suit a lightly built instrument.
