Electric Guitar Strings

Do I need a guitar setup after switching to a lower tuning or heavier strings?

Quick Answer

For a small change like Drop D, there's usually very little setup involved. As you tune lower or switch to heavier string gauges, it's important to make sure your guitar is properly adjusted.

Changes in tuning or string gauge can change neck relief, action, nut fit and intonation.

In many cases, small adjustments to the truss rod or bridge will keep the guitar playing its best. The bigger the change, the more likely you'll need them. Drop B and Drop A are big changes, so most guitars benefit from setup adjustments in those tunings.

If you're not comfortable making those adjustments yourself, visit a professional technician.
