How do I know if my guitar needs a setup?

Quick Answer

Common signs are high action that makes playing hard, fret buzz that wasn't there before, chords that sound out of tune higher up the neck even when open strings are in tune, and tuning that won't hold. A gauge or tuning change, a seasonal humidity shift or a new guitar are all good reasons to check the setup.

A setup adjusts neck relief, string height, nut slots and intonation so the guitar plays comfortably and in tune.

Signs to watch for:

  • Strings sit high off the frets, especially near the nut.
  • New buzz on some frets or strings.
  • The 12th-fret note is noticeably sharp or flat compared to the open string.
  • The neck looks visibly bowed when you sight along it.
  • Tuning drifts after bends or for no obvious reason.

Common triggers:

  • Changing string gauge or tuning.
  • Moving to a different climate, or seasonal humidity swings.
  • A new guitar that traveled through shipping and storage.

Some adjustments, like intonation and saddle height, are approachable at home. Truss rod work and nut slots are worth leaving to a technician if you're unsure. A good setup often helps playability more than any string change.
