Electric Guitar Strings

What strings should I use for Drop B or Drop A tuning?

Quick Answer

For Drop B, most players prefer .012 or .013 gauge strings. For Drop A, most players use .013 or heavier. Standard gauge strings usually feel too loose in either tuning.

These tunings drop every string and then lower the lowest string even further:

  • Drop B: B F# B E G# C#
  • Drop A: A E A D F# B

Both tunings make standard-gauge strings feel very loose, so heavier gauges or custom string sets are recommended. Heavier strings help maintain a firm feel, tone and tuning stability.

Many players use Drop B and Drop A on standard-scale guitars with heavier strings. A baritone guitar's longer scale can give a firmer feel and better clarity at these pitches.

Expect to make setup adjustments. Most guitars benefit from them to maintain proper playability and tuning at these lower pitches.
