What strings does a bouzouki use?

Quick Answer

Most bouzoukis use light steel strings in paired courses, usually loop end. The exact gauges depend on the type: an Irish bouzouki is commonly tuned G D A D, while a four-course Greek bouzouki is commonly tuned C F A D.

"Bouzouki" covers several instruments. The Irish bouzouki is a flat-backed, four-course instrument often tuned G D A D and used in Irish and Celtic music. The Greek bouzouki is round-backed, and the four-course version is commonly tuned C F A D. Scale lengths and string arrangements vary between makers, so gauges that suit one instrument may not suit another.

Our BZK1128 set (.011–.028) has eight strings in four courses:

  • The top two courses are paired in unison.
  • The bottom two courses each pair a wound string with a thinner plain string an octave above.

It uses silver-plated and steel strings for a bright, articulate response with strong projection. It's loop end, so it fits a traditional tailpiece, and it's gauged to feel even across the courses.
