Bass Strings

What is standard tuning for 4-, 5- and 6-string bass?

Quick Answer

Standard 4-string bass tuning is E A D G. A 5-string most commonly adds a low B (B E A D G), and a 6-string adds both a low B and a high C (B E A D G C).

A less common 5-string tuning adds a high C instead of a low B, giving E A D G C. Confirm which tuning your bass uses before ordering strings.

Standard tuning is the default for most bass instruction, songs and reference material, so it's the most practical place for new players to start.

5-string and 6-string basses need sets that include the extra strings. Gauge, scale length, construction and fit still need to match your instrument.
