Bass Strings

What are the best strings for a Jazz Bass?

Quick Answer

A Jazz Bass-style bass has a 34" scale and takes long scale strings (about 37.25" usable winding length). .045–.105 is the standard four-string starting point. Nickel roundwounds give a balanced, punchy tone; stainless adds brightness and attack, often used for slap. Our NR45105L and SR45105L suit the J-style bass well.

J-style basses have two single-coil pickups and a slim neck, and they respond to string changes in a clear way. Start from the sound you want.

How to choose:

  • Warm and punchy all-rounder: nickel roundwound.
  • Bright, aggressive, slap-friendly: stainless steel.
  • Tighter, more focused low end: Fusion Wound.
  • Lighter feel under the fingers: Foundations, which we make to be more flexible than Power Wound.
  • Five-string J-style bass: .045–.125 adds a low B.

Measure before ordering if your bass loads strings through the body. Gauge or construction changes may need a small truss rod adjustment.
