Electric Guitar Strings

What are hybrid (light top / heavy bottom) string sets?

Quick Answer

A hybrid set pairs lighter treble strings with heavier bass strings. You get easy bending on top and a tighter, punchier low end, which is also why hybrids are a common choice for drop tunings.

In a conventional set the gauges climb at a steady rate. A hybrid breaks that pattern on purpose: the top strings stay light for bends and lead work, while the wound strings get heavier so the low end doesn't feel floppy, especially when you tune down.

Light top / heavy bottom sets in our Power Wound Nickel line:

  • .009–.046 (S946 Rock N Roll)
  • .010–.048 (S1048 Light Plus)
  • .010–.052 (S1052 Heavy Bottom)
  • .011–.056 (S1156 Heavier Bottom)

Some of our other lines have hybrids too: PN946 and PN1052 in Power Groove, CS946 in CRT Coated Nickel and SL946 in Semi-Flat Silencers.

Going the other way, a few sets keep a standard top with a lighter low end: .010–.038 (S1038 Light Bottom) and .010–.042 (S1042 Light Hybrid).

If you switch to a set with noticeably heavier bass strings, your guitar may need a small setup adjustment.
