Are lap steel strings different from regular guitar strings?

Quick Answer

Yes and no. The strings themselves can be similar, but lap steel sets are gauged differently to keep the feel balanced in lap steel tunings, and some are built differently for playing with a bar.

You can use regular guitar strings on lap steel, but they aren't always ideal. Standard sets can feel uneven in lap steel tunings.

Construction can differ too. Semi-flat sets like the Scotty's compression-wound strings have a smoother surface designed for playing with a steel bar, which feels different from traditional roundwound guitar strings.

Most players use strings designed for lap steel to get the right feel, reduce noise and improve control.
