About

Pete Weiss is a New England-based producer, engineer, mastering engineer, guitarist, and writer whose career has spanned more than three decades in the recording industry. Known for his artist-first philosophy and ability to work across a wide range of musical styles, Pete has earned a reputation for creating organic, authentic recordings while helping artists realize their creative vision without being constrained by genre conventions.

Beginning in the early 1990s, Pete established himself as a respected producer and engineer through his work at Zippah Studio in Boston, which he co-founded in 1989. His production and mixing credits include an impressive roster of artists such as Peter Holsapple, Charlie Chesterman, Chris Brokaw, Kustomized, Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Doug Yule, Bell X1, Willard Grant Conspiracy, Two Dollar Pistols, Bow Thayer, Levon Helm, and Hayley Thompson-King.

In the early 2010s, Pete expanded into mastering and has since worked on projects involving artists including The Jayhawks, The Rubinoos, Dr. John, Dusty Springfield, Morphine, Type O Negative, Juliana Hatfield, and Marshall Crenshaw.

After selling his share of Zippah in 2004, Pete founded Verdant Studio, a unique retreat-style recording facility in rural Vermont that combined professional recording capabilities with artist lodging. Verdant operated successfully until 2020, when Pete transitioned to working from his Boston-based studio.

Outside of his recording work, Pete serves as a Senior Contributor for Tape Op Magazine, where he reviews audio equipment and interviews influential figures from the recording industry. He has also participated in numerous industry panels, workshops, and conferences hosted by Tape Op and Potluck Audio.

As a musician, Pete continues to perform with instrumental surf-rock group The Weisstronauts, which he has led since 1999, while also playing guitar with Valley of Weights. His diverse musical interests range from country and surf guitar to heavy, fuzz-driven rock, making him one of the most versatile musicians and producers in the independent recording community.

Why S.I.T.?

“Since the early 2000s, I have favored S.I.T. Strings. The variety of sets and gauges is incredibly versatile. I play country and surf-style guitar in The Weisstronauts, but I also play heavy, fuzzed-out guitar with Valley of Weights. I play bass on various recording projects as well, and I love the S.I.T. Semi-Flats for that application. I spend a lot of time in the studio as a producer and engineer, and I always keep a variety of S.I.T. sets and single strings on hand to offer and recommend to the musicians I work with.”
