About Universals Balanced Tension

On a standard set, the strings don't all feel the same, which is why a G can feel stiff while the high E feels loose. Universals are gauged to even that out, so the feel is consistent from the sixth string to the first.

The result is a set that feels connected under the hand. Chords sit more evenly, bends behave the same way wherever you are on the neck, and picking response is consistent across the set. All three are built on a nickel-plated steel wrap over a high carbon steel hex core, so the tone stays familiar.

Choosing a set

.0105–.048 (SU101 Paul Allen Custom), developed with artist Paul Allen, is the standard option and the place to start. .009–.040 (SU102 Extra Light Custom) is the lighter set for lead players and anyone who prefers a softer touch. Seven-string players take .0105–.059 (SU107 Extended Range), which carries the same balanced gauging across all seven strings — the string count where an uneven feel is most noticeable.

How Universals compare to our other electric sets

Universals are about feel rather than tone — the wrap and core match Power Wound Nickel, so the sound is familiar and only the feel changes. Power Wound Nickel is the conventionally gauged version. Power Steel Stainless is brighter and more aggressive, Power Groove Pure Nickel warmer and more vintage. CRT Coated Nickel adds corrosion resistance, Semi-Flat Silencers cut finger noise, and Power Flat flatwounds go furthest toward a smooth, mellow response.
