Which strings stay bright the longest?

Quick Answer

Stainless steel strings often stay bright longer than nickel-plated strings, because stainless resists corrosion better. On acoustic, phosphor bronze and Monel are known for holding their tone well.

Experiences vary with playing habits and maintenance. Construction matters too, since materials, wrap wire design and manufacturing all affect how a string changes over time.

Nickel strings may feel smoother as they age. Flatwound and semi-flat bass strings change more gradually than roundwounds. Coated strings also resist contamination longer.

Whatever you play, wiping your strings down after playing helps them last.
