What are the best guitar strings for kids or small hands?

Quick Answer

For kids or small hands, lighter strings reduce the pressure needed to fret. On electric, .009–.042 or .008–.038; on steel-string acoustic, .010–.048 or .009–.046. A nylon-string classical guitar with medium-tension strings is softer again. Our S942, P1048, P946 and SCM101B are good options. A good setup matters as much as gauge.

A smaller guitar helps too. Shorter scale lengths reduce stretch and make the same gauge feel slightly softer.

How to choose:

  • Electric: .009–.042 is easy to fret; .008–.038 is lighter still.
  • Steel-string acoustic: .010–.048, or .009–.046 for the lightest feel.
  • Classical (nylon): medium tension, with ball-end strings for easy changes.
  • Setup: high action on a budget or small guitar makes any strings hard to play. Have it checked.

Check the guitar's string type before ordering. Nylon strings go only on classical guitars, and steel strings only on guitars built for them.
