Acoustic Strings

What are the best acoustic guitar strings for strumming?

Quick Answer

For strumming, .012–.052 80/20 bronze or .012–.054 phosphor bronze has enough weight to project and stay clear under a pick. 80/20 is brighter with crisp attack; phosphor bronze is warmer and fuller. For maximum volume, try .013–.056. Our GB1252 Light, P1254 Light and RL1356 Medium are good starting points.

Strumming with a pick puts a lot of energy into the strings. A slightly heavier gauge keeps the strings from flapping and helps the top project, but heavier sets are also harder on the fretting hand.

How to choose:

  • Bright and cutting: 80/20 bronze. We describe Golden Bronze as having faster attack and sharper note separation than phosphor bronze.
  • Warm and full: phosphor bronze.
  • Fuller still, with more even response: Royal Bronze.
  • Loudest: .013–.056. Make sure your guitar is built for medium gauge.

If your guitar already sounds bright, phosphor bronze may suit it better. If it sounds dark, 80/20 may help.
