Acoustic Strings

What are S.I.T. acoustic bass strings made of, and what gauges are available?

Quick Answer

Our Acoustic Bass Strings use a 92/8 phosphor bronze cover wrap over a high carbon steel hex core. The 4-string set is .045, .065, .085, .105, and the 5-string set adds a .125 low B.

Available sets:

  • 4-string (ABG45105L): .045, .065, .085, .105
  • 5-string (ABG545125L): .045, .065, .085, .105, .125

We don't currently make a 6-string acoustic bass set.

These sets are gauged for standard tuning. A 4-string acoustic bass is commonly tuned E A D G, and a 5-string adds a low B for B E A D G. Tuning lower will change the feel and may affect your instrument's setup.

A heavier gauge generally feels firmer at the same pitch and scale length, but how loud or full an acoustic bass sounds also depends on the instrument, setup, technique and amplification. After changing strings, check relief, action and intonation, and adjust if one has changed enough to cause a problem.
