How often should I change guitar strings?

Quick Answer

There's no universal schedule. Some players change strings every few weeks, and others keep a set for several months. Playing frequency, environment, body chemistry and string type all affect string life.

Many professionals change strings more often than casual players, especially before shows, recording sessions or tours.

If your strings sound dull after only a few weeks, the cause is often how much you play, your body chemistry, climate, humidity or how the guitar is stored.

The same idea applies to every stringed instrument: replace strings when they no longer sound, feel or hold tune the way you want.
