Acoustic Strings

How can I make my acoustic guitar easier to play?

Quick Answer

Two changes make the biggest difference: lighter strings and a proper setup. Dropping from .012–.054 to .010–.048 or .011–.050 reduces the pressure needed to fret at standard pitch. Lowering high action and nut slots makes every set easier. Our P1048 Extra Light and P946 Ultra Light are the easiest-playing phosphor bronze sets we make.

Start with the setup. If strings sit high above the frets, especially near the nut, no string choice will fully fix it. A technician can adjust neck relief, saddle height and nut slots. Then consider lighter strings:

  • .011–.050: a moderate step down from lights.
  • .010–.048: noticeably easier, with a little less volume and bass.
  • .009–.046: the lightest we make for acoustic.

Other things that help:

  • A capo at the 2nd or 3rd fret shortens the vibrating length and reduces effort.
  • Fresh strings feel smoother than old, corroded ones.
  • Semi-flat strings feel smoother under sliding fingers.

Switching to lighter strings can change neck relief. Recheck the setup after a big gauge drop. S.I.T. options: P1048 Extra Light, P1150 Pro Light and P946 Ultra Light in Phosphor Bronze, or CP1047 Extra Light in CRT Coated Phosphor Bronze.
