Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Drue Williams Jr. began his musical journey at age nine, performing alongside his father in the gospel quartet The Ohio Silvertones. By age eleven, he was already performing professionally, developing a lifelong passion for the bass guitar.
Influenced by legendary bassists Stanley Clarke, Jaco Pastorius, and others, Drue developed a distinctive melodic style that allows his bass guitar to become the lead voice of his music.
Throughout his career, Drue has had the privilege of recording with Grammy Award-winning bassist Victor Wooten and touring with Grammy Award-winning musician Roy “Futureman” Wooten. These experiences have contributed to his musical development and artistic versatility across gospel, jazz, funk, R&B, and contemporary instrumental music.
Known professionally as “The Voice of the Bass,” Drue is a solo recording artist, composer, and performer recognized for his expressive approach to the instrument. His ability to bring vocal-like expression to the bass allows him to transform familiar melodies and original compositions into captivating instrumental performances.
Performing primarily on his custom Paul Lairat bass guitars, including his distinctive 7-string bass, Drue continues to explore the melodic possibilities of the instrument through live performances, recordings, and digital media.
Beyond the stage, Drue is the founder and hands-on builder of Boom Bass Cabinets (BBC), a boutique bass speaker cabinet company whose products have been sold through major music retailers, including Guitar Center and Sweetwater. His experience designing and building professional bass cabinets gives him a unique understanding of tone, sound reproduction, and the relationship between the instrument and its amplification.
As an S.I.T. Strings artist, Drue brings decades of professional musical experience, technical craftsmanship, and an unwavering commitment to achieving exceptional bass tone.
With original music available on major streaming platforms, Drue continues to inspire audiences and fellow musicians through his musical philosophy:
“The bass doesn’t just provide the foundation — it can sing.”
