Pete Weiss

Pete Weiss is a New England-based producer/engineer/musician who operated both Zippah and Verdant Studios. Starting in the early 90’s his unfussy, organic, “artist first” work earned him a reputation as an outstanding producer capable of adapting to many musical genres and unafraid of ignoring stylistic convention.  His production and mixing credits include Peter Holsapple, Charlie Chesterman, Chris Brokaw, Kustomized, Slim Cessna’s Auto Club, Doug Yule, Bell X1, Willard Grant Conspiracy, Two Dollar Pistols, Bow Thayer & Levon Helm, Hayley Thompson-King and many others.

In the early 2010’s Weiss added mastering to his studio activities, and has since earned credits with artists such as The Jayhawks, The Rubinoos, Dr. John, Dusty Springfield, Morphine, Type O Negative, Juliana Hatfield, Marshall Crenshaw and others.

In 1989 he co-founded Zippah in Boston. Selling his share of Zippah in 2004, he built and opened Verdant, an “open room” retreat-style studio with artist lodging in rural Vermont which he sold in 2020.  Since then, he has been working out of his Boston home.

He is a Senior Contributor for Tape Op Magazine, writing reviews of audio equipment as well as conducting interviews with recording industry figures. Over the years he has served on many panels & workshops at Tape Op’s and Potluck Audio’s conferences.  He plays guitar with Valley Of Weights and since 1999 has fronted the guitar-centric instrumental band The Weisstronauts.

Why S.i.T.?

“Since the early 2000’s I have favored S.I.T. Strings —  the variety of sets/gauges is VERY versatile.  I play country and surf type guitar in The Weisstronauts but also play heavy, fuzzed-out guitar with Valley of Weights I also play bass on various recording projects, and love the S.I.T. semi-flats for this.  I spend a lot of time in the studio as a producer-engineer, and always have a variety of S.I.T. sets and single strings on hand, to offer and recommend to musicians I work with.”
