Staind's Aaron Lewis "It's time to get Heavy on the new Record"

Tuesday, September 13, 2011 - 11:33

SIT Strings Artist AARON LEWIS SAYS NEW STAIND ALBUM RETURNS TO BAND’S ROOTS

In over fifteen years of hard-hitting rocking, Staind have mastered the skill of crafting tunes that are richly melodic and lyrically thought-provoking, while still viciously heavy. The Springfield, Mass., outfit’s seventh studio album, out today (Sept. 13), is packed with a combination of hard-edged rock chords and teeth-gnashing riffs, resulting in a sound mottled enough to remain compelling, but rarely off-putting or overindulgent.

Above all, it’s heavy. The collection is heavier, in fact, than any of Staind’s previous releases. This is sludgy, gut-wrenching music where the sonic grain serves as coloring for the forlorn words. Anyone who’s reared on alternative metal will find comfort in the self-titled release and appreciate how Staind have returned to their foreboding, heavy roots.

Amid the busyness of releasing a new album, frontman Aaron Lewis found time to speak with Audio Ink Radio about the new album, the difficult process of recording it and why he wishes he’d never told anyone the meaning behind, “Epiphany.”

This new album is the heaviest Staind album yet. What led you guys to go in that direction?

It was really time. We had drifted so far away from what it was that we were when we started out, and it was time to come back to what started it all and what got us here.

There have been comparisons between this release and Staind’s second album in 1999, Dysfunction. Would you agree with that?

Only on one level. I would agree in the sense that during the recoding process of Dysfunction, there was a nervous, anticipating, excited fear of the unknown. The energy in the studio while we were recording was tangible and captured on tape.

On this record, it was the frustration and the unknowing — and all in a negative way — that was also captured on tape.

You just premiered the documentary of the making of the album, The Making of Staind, and you’ve stated before it was hard to watch, because it shows how difficult it was to record the album. What got you guys through it, when times got tough?

The fact that we weren’t together and were doing things separately. [Laughs] That we weren’t actually spending time in the same room together. Then, we didn’t talk to each other until after things had calmed down and everybody was able to take a step back from what it was we were so involved in doing to see that everything was okay. The album’s first single, “Not Again,” is No. 1 on the rock chart. Will you put me inside the song and your state of mind when writing it?

It all manifested itself through the song– the duress and struggle that it was to make this record. I’ve always felt like if you tell people what the songs are about, as the writer, it’s like telling somebody what the end of the movie is before they go see the movie. It kind of ruins the experience for the listener. It’s one of the great things about music, that from the listener’s point of view, they can see it for what they want to see it for. They can apply it to their life and how the words fit them, and not only see it through the face value of what it was written about.

There’s one song that I’ve said what it’s about over the years, and it kind of ruined it for a lot of people, and that’s, “Epiphany.” I don’t think anybody realized that song was about ADD. I think they adapted the song for what it meant to them. Now you listen to the song knowing that it’s about me having ADD, and there’s a whole new, different meaning to the song.

Why do you think Staind have managed to survive and thrive after the post-grunge, rock bubble of the late-‘90s and early-2000s, when so many bands have fallen away?

I don’t know. Maybe because we have amazing fans. I don’t really know what we might have done differently over the years. We’ve always tried as hard as we could to not let anybody else’s visions or interpretations be allowed to be applied to us in any way, and we’ve always stayed very true to ourselves, and we’ve never gotten sucked into the over exposure machine. I can count on one hand the amount of award shows I’ve been to and red carpets I’ve walked down, and we’ve just really never cared about that stuff. Maybe it’s the fact we’ve quietly sold 15 million records. Maybe that’s the reason why we’re still here, because we did it quietly.

Staind plan to do a proper tour for the album next year, right?

Yeah, there’s a week in December and a weekend here in September, but we will kick off a real tour next year, when we get back from Australia and Japan and Hawaii.

Staind just announced they’ll be playing a show in New York City to benefit the families of 9/11 on Sept. 15. Why did you guys feel moved to do this?

Because of the coincidence with everything– the fact this is our release week, and the fact that when they started talking about doing a show for release week in New York City, the release date and 9/11 fall in the same week. I thought that instead of doing your usual release week show somewhere, we should have it mean something. I certainly haven’t forgotten.

In the September 2011 issue of Guitar World magazine, you can find the third installment of "Mega Bass" column penned by David Ellefson. This month's column, "The Write Stuff", focuses on notes on songwriting, includingMegadeth's "Foreclosure of a Dream" and "Dawn Patrol". The magazine is out on newsstands now.

ASLO NEW RECORD TO DROP NOV. 1

Megadeth's 13th studio album, "TH1RT3EN", will be released on November 1, 2011. Says Dave Mustaine, "This record is the culmination of my work over the 13 records I recorded. There are moments on TH1RT3EN that capture my every emotion, and other moments where I am releasing feelings I never knew existed! My proudest moments of my musical career are captured on TH1RT3EN". The album's title has several layers of meaning, which Mustaine, who first picked up an axe at the age of 13, revealed in a recent chat with RollingStone.com, saying, "I was born on September 13th; this is my thirteenth record. It just seemed like it was the right thing to do to call it TH1RT3EN".

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT- JERMAINE MORGAN

Tuesday, June 21, 2011 - 14:57

Jermaine Morgan came from a very musical family.  Both of his parents play instruments, his mother plays piano and bass and his father plays guitar.  Jermaine remembers his older brother being the most influential in him playing, simply because of the fact that he was his older brother. Everything his brother wanted to do for the most part Jermaine wanted to do.  His older brother could play almost any instrument he picked up, so naturally Jermaine did the same.

Jermaine started playing drums and piano first. At the age of twelve he picked up guitar and the bass around the age of fourteen. Bass was never a primary instrument for Jermaine initially because he always considered himself a guitarist. Subconsciously it was there all time as he played tuba in the band for many years and had always enjoyed being the foundation for the band.

Jermaine had picked up the bass at the age of fourteen but never took it as seriously as a guitar until he reached college. His perspective changed about the instrument because of the other musicians he was exposed to. He faced many challenges when trying to learn more about trying to groove and solo. Over the years Jermaine has spent many hours practicing to a metronome and listening to other musicians as to understand their approach and develop his own.
Jermaine remembers the first bass he learned on, it was a Fender Squire four string. The bass he purchased not long after was a Fender Jazz Deluxe Five String. Jermaine currently plays is own custom signature Warrior Isabella five string.

Jermaine has been blessed with many opportunities to play for quite a few Gospel artists such as:  Israel Houghton, Darwin Hobbs, Juanita Bynum, Bryon Cage, Richard Smallwood, Dottie Peoples, William Murphy, Myron Williams, Trent Cory, Saxophonist Angella Christie, and many others.

Jermaine plays bass for Canton Jones but also has been working on his record ” The Journey Continues” which will be a follow up to his single he released last year, “Journey”. Jermaine is writing and producing most of the material with the help of other great writers and musicians.  This record will definitely be one that all musicians and music lovers can appreciate at the end of the day. His album is expected to be release this fall.

Jermaine Morgan: ” I hope to inspire and encourage others to go for the impossible through my music”.

Theory of a Deadman - The Truth Is...

Tuesday, May 10, 2011 - 02:40

Vancouver rock band Theory of a Deadman are currently mounting their return to the rock scene with their fourth studio album, The Truth Is… The album is due out July 12th via Roadrunner/604 Records and was recorded at Bay 7 in Los Angeles with producer, Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance, 3 Doors Down). The band is currently road-testing some of the new songs while on tour, including “Lowlife,” which is the first single, set to land at radio in mid-May.

A lot has transpired since the release of 2008’s breakthrough, Scars & Souvenirs. Through a pair of #1 singles in the form of “So Happy” and “Bad Girlfriend” as well as “Not Meant To Be” landing Top 5 at Hot AC, their patented, arena-sized hooks and non-stop touring with the likes of Daughtry, Motley Crue, Godsmack and everyone in between, the album earned Platinum status the old-fashioned way. The band aims to keep the momentum going with The Truth Is… which cycles through an array of infectious anthems and mid-tempo rockers that don’t scrimp on sense of humor and even a ballad or two!

"Musically, not too much changed," said vocalist/guitarist Tyler Connolly about The Truth Is… "We had a bit of an epiphany when it came to songwriting though. We've been a band for over a decade now, and we realized what we're doing makes sense. There was a lot more confidence. I was able to dig in lyrically and be wide open. When I write, I either want to kiss someone on the lips or punch them in the face. Anything in between is boring."

Theory are currently touring and shaking the foundations of venues across America with labelmates Stone Sour as part of the first annual Avalanche Tour. Theory will embark on a headline run this summer, as well.

Theory of a Deadman are Tyler Connolly [Lead Vocals, Lead Guitar], David Brenner [Rhythm Guitar], Dean Back [Bass], Joey Dandeneau [Drums].

Help send The Hollow to London!

Monday, April 18, 2011 - 08:20

SIT Artist The Hollow are now 1 of 10 bands left to play in London on Main Stage for 60,000 people!

Help send The Hollow to London! Thousands of bands entered Hard Rock's Battle Of The Bands at Hard Rock Cafes all over the world. The Hollow (a soulful modern rock band from NJ), reigned as winner after beating out countless other bands in the tri-state region in the Hard Rock Cafe NYC Times Square competition. The judges (which includes Little Steven of the legendary E Street Band and Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy) narrowed down the field to 40 bands. Now, it's up to you to vote!
Online voting starts on April 12, 2011 here: http://www.hardrockbattleofbands.com.

The Hollow is competing for a chance to play at Hard Rock Calling in London! They're battling for a spot on the same bill as Bon Jovi, Rod Stewart, Stevie Nicks and many more to be announced. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play this incredible music festival in London's Hyde Park.

Vote for The Hollow Here: http://www.hardrockbattleofbands.com/TheHollow/

About The Hollow: Sometimes it’s good to just hear a solid dose of rock ‘n roll without a thousand bells and whistles. The Hollow can be counted on for exactly this, as their self-titled debut packs enough soul, rock and electricity into their 12 tracks to power a small city. If you’re looking for a rocking good time, then look no further: The Hollow are at your service. They don’t just belt out the crunchy rock tracks one after another, but instead they infuse their music with a lot of soul, variety and precision. They also don’t just play the same three chords over and over either, instead choosing to mix in time changes on several songs to change up the dynamics. To put it simply, The Hollow rocks... and every song on this album deserves to be cranked up and enjoyed!

Faithsedge & Scarlet Records

Faithsedge has signed a deal with Scarlet Records for the worldwide release of their much anticipated self-titled debut album on April 19th, 2011.

Faithsedge was started by singer/songwriter Giancarlo Floridia in Huntington Beach, California, in early 2009. The band's all-star line up includes renowned bassist/producer Fabrizio Grossi (Steve Lukather/Starbreaker), former Dokken guitarist Alex De Rosso and drummer Tony Morra (Rebecca St James, Van Zant). The resulting effort is a perfect mix of hard rock, heavy metal and progressive, with lots of vocals and hooks, shredding guitar solos, pounding bass and drums and plenty of melodically challenging songwriting.

'Faithsedge' was mastered by Tom Baker at Precision Mastering (Judas Priest/Motley Crue). The album will be out April 19th, 2011. Get ready for Faithsedge!

Aaron Lewis Town Line

Tuesday, March 15, 2011 - 19:33

Royal Bronze Acoustic player AARON LEWIS has been resoundingly welcomed
into the Nashville community as his debut solo CD TOWN LINE enters the
Billboard Country Albums Chart at #1. The Staind frontman’s critically
acclaimed EP, produced by Grammy Award-winner James Stroud, also lands
at #7 on the Top 200 Albums Chart, with first week sales exceeding
37,000 copies.

The success of TOWN LINE is being fueled by the lead single and video
“Country Boy,” currently a fixture on CMT’s “Top 20 Countdown” show. The
singer, songwriter and musician performed “Country Boy” March 1 on
ABC-TV’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” in Los Angeles, after which LEWIS flew to
Nashville to perform at the annual Country Radio Seminar (CRS).

TOWN LINE has drawn critical praise from a wide variety of writers,
including COUNTRY WEEKLY’s Jessica Phillips who said, "The songs here
are rich with imagery, coupled with soulful arrangements, and should
appeal to fans of Darius Rucker and Lady Antebellum (3/7/11)." PEOPLE’s
Chuck Arnold noted that "He proves to be a natural on nostalgic ballads
like 'The Story Never Ends,’ (3/14/11)," while ASSOCIATED PRESS’ Michael
McCall wrote, “He injects a flavor of his own into a polished,
commercial country sound in a way that could win over country fans
who've never heard of Staind (2/28/11).”

Talking about LEWIS’ warm welcome from the country world, James Stroud
says: “This town appreciates great songs and great talent and Aaron
certainly brings both of those to the table, but a #1 record is more
than we let ourselves dream about when we were making the record. We
just couldn't be more thrilled."
On “Country Boy,” LEWIS gets a little help from legends George Jones and
Charlie Daniels, striking a balance between classic and modern country,
as LEWIS tells his story like never before.

Ahead of the official single release, “Country Boy” generated widespread
airplay, with various rock and country stations adding it to their
playlists on their own. The striking video for “Country Boy”--also
featuring George Jones and Charlie Daniels--debuted at #1 on the CMT.com
chart and has received over 900,000 views to date. The video still
regularly charts on the Top 5 of all videos on the website over three
months after its debut. It has now been viewed over 2.7 million times on
YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsQzw_Ax8Cw.
Meanwhile, critical praise for TOWN LINE is building.

Eric Taylor of Saving Abel

Tuesday, December 14, 2010 - 14:50

Hello SIT Player!

Eric Taylor, born in Tennessee, but found his way down to Mississippi around the age 10. "I learned at an early age that if you want something in life, you got to work for it". At age 13, he convinced a couple families down the road to let him cut their lawn every week. He took his earnings to buy his first guitar.

After a few years of playing guitar in church, he was ready for something new.  The bass player at his church gave him a bass, and he never went back to picking up the guitar. Over the years Eric went through a couple of bands during and after high school but never really went anywhere with it. " I Got married in 2005 and kind of put playing live up on a shelf for a bit. My wife came home one day and said that someone she worked with sang for a band that needed a bass player". He didn't know at that time, but that someone was someone he has known since the age of 6. Long story short, Eric end up the bass player in a band that would become the 'Saving Abel' that everyone knows. They signed to Virgin Records in 2007 and the debut album came out in 2008. With the huge success of Saving Abel's singles 'Addicted', '18 Days', and 'Drowning', the album went gold in 2009. The Bands second album, "Miss America", came out earlier this summer. And the first single "Stupid Girl" peaked at 5 on the rock charts; the current single: "The Sex is Good" is rapidly climbing the charts. Go out, grab a copy of "Miss America", and come catch a show. Eric Taylor & Saving Abel will be out on tour with Hinder all winter.

Dave Ellefson Signature Series Bass Strings

Thursday, November 25, 2010 - 04:24

"Power, punch and clarity are the cornerstone of my bass guitar tone and these SIT signature strings are designed to deliver just that."

- David Ellefson

Electric bassist David Ellefson has helped create and define Thrash Metal bass playing. His work with MEGADETH has placed him at the forefront of the scene since the band’s inception in 1983 and his unique style and approach has set him apart as one of the most distinguished bassists in the genre.

These SIT David Ellefson Signature Series nickel strings were specifically selected and gauged by David Ellefson for his professional touring and recording needs. They offer a super smooth, slinky feel as wellas anoticeable upper mid-range punch not found in other strings.

David Ellefson's playing requires total precision and delivered at high volume. Plus these demands must be unparalleled with an even output across the fingerboard for all notes on the neck. The specially developed SIT core produces the ultra punchy upper mid-range demanded by David for his music, especially on the D and G strings where many strings tend to lose their impact when playing at high volumes. This is even more so with heavy and progressive music like David's. SIT's unique winding process ensures that these strings will stay in tune and deliver extremely high output & clarity in your playing, too.

We think you’ll find these David Ellefson Signature Series strings to be some of the finest available for all music styles and bass guitars. We think you too will find that they will bring out the best that your music and instrument have to offer. Pick up a set today and hear the difference for yourself.

John Moyer and Disturbed - "Decade of Disturbed DVD!"

Thursday, November 25, 2010 - 03:21

Hey SIT Players,

Much is happening in the world of John Moyer and Disturbed. John never misses a chance to rock his  SIT Rock Bright Stainless bass strings at every gig!

The new album Asylum showcases the continuing evolution of the band’s tight signature sound.   The aggression and intense rhythmic style that fans have come to expect from John Moyer & the boys of Disturbed are present but many of the songs are different from what they have done in the past with regards to the way the mood and arrangements within the music are presented.  Lyrically there is a darkness that pervades the record as well.

On top of that they have a10 year in the making DVD that comes with the record as well.  The decade of Disturbed DVD is an amazing collection of video footage and interviews that tell the story of disturbed from its humble beginnings to what the band has become today.  It shares many of the highs of the bands career but it also delves into the lows the band has been through as well.  A great look behind the scenes with Disturbed.

As for Touring John & the boys from Disturbed just finished headlining the first ever Uproar tour .  "What a great experience it was.  Avenged Sevenfold, Stone Sour, Hell Yeah, HaleStorm and a great new Canadian band called Hail the Villain were all on the tour.  Got to party with a lot of old friends on that tour and made some new ones! "
After Uproar the band will be touring  Europe on the Taste of Chaos tour in November and December.
John & the guys will take a short break during the holidays and will continue to tour behind the new record Asylum until the end of Summer 2011. More great tours to be announced soon at Disturbed1.com.  And check out John's Myspace page as well!!
